Mohs' hardness scale

Gemstones:  Turquoise

Turquoise experienced a hey-dey during the European renaissance.  During this period, every gentleman wore a ring made of "turkish stone" hoping to be thus protected from nasty riding accidents or unfortunate duels.  Today it is possible to find this stone practically everywhere in the world where aluminum and copper are present.  The greenish tones sometimes found in turquoise are due to iron deposits.  Mystical thinkers of today believe that those who wear turquoise next to the skin have greater intuition and paranormal communication skills.  Everyone can appreciate turquoise stones for their lovely shades of blue to evocative of the sea seen from above.

Hardness on Mohs' scale:  5-6
