Mohs' hardness scale

 Gemstones:  Tiger eye

Tiger eye derives its name from tightly aligned bands of a type of quartz called crocidolite which, when oxydized, give the appearance of a cat's eye.  Tiger eye turns red when heated either by natural geological phenomenon or by artificial means.  Like all stones resembling eyes, this one has its importance for those who are looking for a protective talisman.  Some people believe that wearing tiger eye can help deflect negative energy thus protecting the wearer.  Others claim that wearing this lovely stone increases self-confidence, while maintaining a calm, self-possessed physical and mental demeanor.

Hardness on Mohs' scale:  7
