Like their salt water counterparts, freshwater pearl oysters develop pearls as a protection against the irritation of grains of sand or other intruders inside their shell. They are rarely perfectly round, and their color and luster can vary depending on their location as well as variations in the oyster's habitat and diet. They are, however, very fragile and soft, being situated at 2-2.5 on Mohs' hardness scale. They should be stored separately from other metallic jewelry. Many indigenous myths concerning pearls center around the theme of pearls being tears fallen from the heavens into open oyster shells which save and transform them. Chinese mythology calls them the physical manifestations of man's memories and dreams collected by the moon and re-strewn into the sea where oysters rose to the surface to receive and safeguard them. The customary wearing of pearls by brides derives from the legend of the Indian god Vishnu who gave his daughter, Pandaia, a gift of the most beautiful pearls on her wedding day. Associated with purity and love, pearls are said to follow the cycles of the moon and to aid in the regularization of a woman's natural bio-rhythms.
