Mohs' hardness scale

 Gemstones:  Malachite

Malachite is a copper based stone of a variety of shades of green presented in bands of color or in a concentric circle pattern.  It derives it's name from the Greek word for the mallow plant, "maloche", because of their similar color.  Present in Australia, but more common in Zaire, it is most often found in nodule groups much like a head of broccoli.

When polished, it's complex design appears, which has historically inspired man to use malachite amulets as a protection against the "evil eye".  Often associated with love goddesses with a vengeful tendency with regard to wayward lovers, many people believe malachite has the power to inspire passionate but exclusive love.  It is often used as a wish-making stone for protection during travel and for financial prosperity.

Hardness on Mohs' scale:  3.5-4
