This warm orange toned stone derives it's range of colors from iron oxides in a silica base.  Present on several continents, it has always been a popular stone for personal use in amulets and carvings, with a peak in jewelry use in the 1800's in Europe.  Older civilizations believed that carnelians could exert a positive influence on courage.  It was also thought to diffuse a protective aura around the wearer.  Today, many alternative healers use carnelian to alleviate great stress or trauma while speeding up the body's own healing process.  It's range of warm orange colors represent wellness and positive energy.
