A type of quartz formed when bubbles of volcanic gas becomes trapped in rock cavities called geodes. When split apart, a geode reveals a myriad of crystals ranging in color from pale lavender to intense purple. Not surprising, therefore, that this fascinating stone is found at the center of as many ancient cultures as contemporary ones. Amethyst is associated with Saint Valentine, and with faithful love because the saint himself wore an amethyst ring engraved with a cupid. In the Catholic church, amethyst symbolizes purity and many bishops wear rings made with these stones. Ancient Egyptian warriors wore amethyst amulets when leaving on a campaign to ensure courage when facing the enemy. In Tibet, it is Buddha's stone, and is found in most prayer stones. In the north African deserts, wise men dropped this stone in water to call forth much needed rains. In ancient Greece, amethysts were used to protect against drunkeness. Today, some believe that wearing these lovely stones help to calm turbulent emotions and can aid in regulating sleep cycles.
